I very rarely use a pencil to mark out a spoon.
I mark out with the axe, carefully opening up the shape I require.
With a good, sharp axe, I open up a slot, then place subsequent chops carefully into the opened slot, moving toward the handle as I go.
I then turn the spoon and carefully remove the opened shaves of wood.
This simple technique allows me to draw with my axe.
