The sun is shining, down here in the West country.
I'm presently busy preparing my camping and carving equipment for the up-coming

bushcraft-knife-sharpening+wildernessgathering+workshopheaven

A big bushcraft event held up in Wiltshire on
Bush Farm Bison Centre.
West Knoyle.
BA126AE.
I'll be taking my carving gear and demonstrating some simple spoon carving techniques to all the visitors to the show.

I have received a few bits and pieces in the post recently.
My good friend and supporter Matthew Platt of
purveyor of top quality wood working tools, has sent a parcel containing a new set of Bear Waterstones along with a Nagura stone, some Chromium oxide paste and g/p workshop leather.

Everything a person needs to put a good edge on your preferred edge tool.

Japanese-water-stones+Japanese water stones+workshopheaven

I will be demonstrating good use of these stones and strop at the Gathering.

My friend and associate Chris Grant has been busy on a new MaChris bushcraft knife type which I will show at the Gathering before writing it up here on SCFS.

But here's a small taster....

Jon Mac+bushcraft knife

I will be giving it a test over the next few days.
But I found time to take it into the Dart Gorge for a pick nick with Sarah a few days ago.
I think you're going to like this new type.
We'll add it to the line up of MaChris knives already available once I have given it a full apraisal.

Now.
What with all this talk of sharpening and carving gear, I would feel remiss if I didn't mention Kevin Endicott.
He'll be at the show with a huge tent crammed with everything you need to spend time in the countryside.
has been a great support to me for many, many years.
Kevin's father used to supply bits of useful kit when I was with the Mountain Rescue.

The Wasp King.

This year at the Wilderness Gathering I was honoured to be crowned
The Wasp King!

Last year at the show we had quite a few visiting wasps and hornets, some folk don't rub along with these creatures too well, my super mate Kaya, being one of them.
She is a dancer and even resorted to a wasp dance to charm the stripy, buzzing creatures away.
I'm lucky to be able, on the whole, to simply ask that they leave. This usually works - much to the amazement of others.
So it came to pass that Kaya decided I would be crowned the Wasp King...

My good friend Terry Longhurst, Scout leader and fine carver was sharing a beer with me at the days end. I noticed Kaya approach and Sarah with the camera....

There was something afoot....

After an explanation I was soon crowned.

The Wasp king !!!

Kaya even wrote a poem for the occasion.

The Wasp King.

He's Lord of the woods.
The spider in the web.
The shepherd of the wasps.
The keeper of keys.
The fire in the hornets nest.
The sailor of the sky.
Protector of the realm.
Saviour of the lost and confused.
He is King, the Wasp King, with the golden crown.

I can't tell you how much we laughed that evening and during the following days of the show.
Thank you so much Kaya.
And thank you to all the friends I caught up with.
Terry, if you read this, I'll chip carve your spoon when you come down to visit next.

MaChris Sandvik 14C28N bushcraft/carver (special edition)

Chris Grant and I have been in cahoots again.
We’ve been pondering whether or not a stainless steel knife can be hard used for camping and camp work.
Chris and I decided to look into the matter.
Imagine, a knife that can be used in damp/wet conditions without staining or corrosion.
A knife that will keep a good edge and is easy to sharpen.
A great idea, one that I was keen to explore.
Chris sourced some good quality stainless from Sweden, apparently the popular 12C27 steel is no longer made. I have some French Laguiole eating knives with this steel, treasured possessions.
He used some new 14C28N, doesn’t roll off the tongue, but there you go.
This 14C28N steel is very similar to 12C27, fine grained, with a keen edge, it also contains Nitrogen molecules, which significantly increase the stain resistance, with no loss of that desirable keen edge; it’s VERY stainless, stainless steel.
So, what handle would compliment this ultra modern blade?…
Previously, Chris has made several ‘Special Edition’ MaChris knives utilising Stabilized wood. This is a process whereby softer woods, like birch or walnut, or weaker woods, such as spalted woods, can be impregnated with a thermo-setting acrylic resin.
Also, this plasticising process makes the handle waterproof!
Ideal for a multi purpose outdoors knife!
As this was the first proper custom knife he had made for me, Chris wanted to do something different and appropriate, personal.
So, for the handle, he opted to use Birch polypore mushroom!
This fungus, often referred to as ‘the razor strop fungus’ has a rich history and many many uses.
It was a very appropriate choice of material considering I have used it many times in the past for honing blades.
The Polypore and I are intimately connected to the Birch tree.
It’s part of our lives….

After some telephone conversations about slight design changes, Chris got to work.

One sunny morning, the postie arrived with a package…
Here it is !!!

Blade:
Sandvik 14C28N. A variant on the very popular 12C27 steel, used for razor blades, French Laguoile, Mora, Brusletto and Karesuando knives.
This variant allows for much greater stain resistance having 0.11% Nitrogen added to the alloy.
The fine grain structure allows a very fine edge, finer than the vast majority of stainless blade steels.
Hardened to 58/59 HRC

Handle:
Stabalised Birch Polypore (Pitoporus betulinus) a common Birch fungus renowned for its many uses.
(I think the use of Pitoporus betulinus for knife scales may be a world first)
It was cut, dried and impregnated with methylacrylate resin.
Most wood when stabilized takes on 20-40% mass, this fungus took on 737%!!
Stabilised/plasticized by Cliff Schooling of Crandart Knives.

Sarah and I took it for an outing up the Dart gorge.

The first job I gave it was dressing up some Chanterelle.

Bushcraft knife+spoon carving knife+jonmac+MaChris+14C28N

I took it to the Wilderness Gathering and demonstrated spoon carving with it.
Carving some easy Birch.
Now I’m home again, unpacked and settled, I thought I should give the knife a good test against my current MaChris made in 52100 bearing steel.
First off I gave them a good sharpen on Japanese water stones supplied by Matthew Platt

Bushcraft knife+spoon carving knife+jonmac+MaChris+14C28N

Bushcraft knife+spoon carving knife+jonmac+MaChris+52100
I selected some year seasoned Laburnum.
Of all the types of wood I have carved in my time, I find that if a blade is going to get damaged, it’ll get damaged in Laburnum.
I carved a small spoon using each knife and gave the blade a light strop, a couple of passes, once, at the half way point.
spoon-carving+spooncarving

Both spoons turned out well.

I inspected the blades under a magnifying glass. I remember testing the 52100 steel some time ago through Laburnum, the results were the same then as now, there was a slight blunting of the cutting edge, the knife was still useable and became sharp after another light strop.

The surprise of the match was the Stainless steel.
There was a little damage noticeable under close inspection with the magnifier, tiny micro pressure chips, pretty well invisible to the naked eye. Even with this light damage, the knife was still sharp.
An aggressive edge that would still, without any further work, see you right for your remaining camp work until you had time to attend to it.
I used it in this state to cut some leather for a strop, it cut without a problem.
The stainless MaChris deals with softer woods without any issues.
The handle material is something else to look at, beautiful.

I worked some of the carving in direct sunlight, the handle remained quite neutral with regards to grip. Not at all slippery.

I gave both knives a quick go on the waters stones, both became sharp with minimal work.

I am super impressed with this Stainless steel.
Chris Grant and I will add this to the family of MaChris now available as a special order item.
A great knife for those of us that may wish to paddle their way into the great outdoors.
Or for those who live and work in some of the wetter parts of the world.

Chris and I have also been busy with the design pencil, we have only the one and we share it between us.
If you are interested in this MaChris Stainless steel type, please feel free to contact Chris Grant at…

In a few months time I should be able to show you something new and quite special from the MaChris design shop.

I've been sent a nice little portable natural stone by Greenwood Direct.
It's a double stone, Arkansas one side with Belgian blue the other.
Just the right size for a pack or pocket.
It seems to polish up my Westermann axe a treat not to mention my MaChris.
I'll write it up in the next few days.

Just a wee note for the purpose of clarity…
On ‘MaChris’ and ‘MiniMac’ sheaths; As standard, the belt loops are fixed with a screw rivet called a ‘Chicago Screw’ the threads are fixed with superglue and won’t come loose. A ‘D-ring’ is also fitted as standard, many folks find it handy…
I choose to fix it his way, because it is very strong, neat, time efficient and can be removed and replaced easily, if ever desired (ie you decide to remove the ‘D-ring’, or to modify it another way).

Here we have a nice pocket portable stone suitable for your backpacking camping trips.
It was sent to me by Tim Walton at

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

I've been using it for a while now and feel ready to write about it.
It's a double sided stone, one side is a soft Arkansas of a grit reported to be around 600 grit.
The other side is a Belgian Blue stone of around 4000 grit.

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

Both the Belgian blue and Arkansas are natural stones.
    Not man made.
So the grits will vary a little from one stone to another.
The stone I have been using is quite fine, I would say the Arkansas side is somewhat finer than advertised.

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

I have been using the stone on both my Axe and carving knives.
The results are really very good, with a razor sharp edge in no time at all.

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

Lots of folk use light oil on an Arkansas stone.
I would recomend using a little water on both sides to keep the pores open and reduce the friction between blade and stone.

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

It doesn't need soaking like some of the Japanese water stones.

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

It's a tough little stone with a measurement of
    100x40x20mm

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

    It weighs in at 188g.
And comes supplied with a nice blue denim bag.

    Spooncarving+sloyd+sharpening+bushcraft

All in all this would make a fine addition to your camp kit for when you want to put a keen edge on your dull Axe or knife.

    Bushcraft folding saws.

    $
    0
    0
I wanted to make a small kuksa for the new year -
something like my large Ale hens, but smaller, more compact.
I knew where some Birch was lying, it has been down for about a year and rather than cutting fresh I decided to try out the older seasoned timber.
I packed a small bag with water and a saw and headed woodward.

I've been using a saw supplied by Matthew Platt who owns Workshop Heaven.
    A purveyor of fine tools.
The saw I have been using recently is a

    bushcraft+bushcraft saw+folding saw+pull saw+workshopheaven

A really good folding pull saw.

    bushcraft+bushcraft saw+folding saw+pull saw+workshopheaven

It's a big old bugger that'll cut pretty much anything that needs dividing into two.
Its 16tpi blade will cope with rip cuts, cross cuts, slant cuts, green and seasoned wood.
The dimensions are, 640 mm unfolded and 350 mm folded.
    It weighs 400 g.

    bushcraft+bushcraft saw+folding saw+pull saw+workshopheaven

The Shogun 265 will cost £37.49.
    Replacement blade is £12.00.

So, once I'd cut my timber I carried it home and set to carving a new year Kuksa.
I did most of the work in my old draughty barn and bought her in and worked at the table when the weather turned.

    kuksa+kuksacarving+bushcraft+kuksacarvingfirststeps

I wanted to try out a little Kolrosing on this kuksa.
So went about finding a repeating pattern that was suitable.

    kuksa+kuksacarving+bushcraft+kuksacarvingfirststeps

I drew the pattern free hand with a pencil, then used a knife to cut lightly into the design.
Once done I rubbed some fine dry coffee grounds into the cuts to highlight them.

    kuksa+kuksacarving+bushcraft+kuksacarvingfirststeps

Whilst this was going on Matthew had sent a more compact saw down to my home here on Dartmoor.

    bushcraft+bushcraft saw+folding saw+pull saw+workshopheaven

It's a really good compact pull saw.
The dimensions are 415 mm unfolded and 237 mm folded.
It weighs in at a cheeky 186 g.
Here's what Workshop Heaven have to sat about it.

The Gyokucho Arame is a high performance folding japanese pruning saw. Its razor sharp progressive teeth slice through the wood quickly and exceptionally cleanly, without crushing or bruising the adjacent timber which would otherwise render the tree more vulnerable to infection.

It also cuts dry wood like a dream, so if you are looking for a nicely proportioned folding saw for the toolbox, car boot, or something to pop in your backpack for camping and bushcraft, this is a perfect, if slightly extravagant, choice!

The blades of Gyokucho saws are treated using a process called electroless nickel plating, this has three functions. Firstly, it protects the blade against corrosion, secondly it provides a nice shiny mirror surface, and thirdly its low friction properties inhibit resins and sap from building up on the blade - anything that does manage to get stuck to them can easily be washed off with warm soapy water. The teeth are differentially impulse hardened, one by one, bringing the outer surfaces to RC68 or more whilst still leaving the metal that forms the 'root' of the tooth tough.

    Blade length 200mm
    Overall length 415mm
    Blade thickness 0.8mm
    Pitch 2.6 to 3.5mm / 10 to 7.25tpi
Max depth of cut = unlimited
    Eva grip handle
Replacement blade = Part No S811

    Gyokucho 811. £29.50
    Replacement blade £16.20

    bushcraft+bushcraft saw+folding saw+pull saw+workshopheaven

I took this saw out today in the Dartmoor rain to cut some more of the Birch.
It's a quick saw and very easily replaces my Silky Pocketboy, the replacement blades are also cheaper.
I think it would show the Laplander the way home also.
Its cheeper to buy than the Pocketboy the price is more comparable with the Bacho Laplander.
The Gyokucho weighs 186 g compared to the Silky 170 which weighs 212 g.
I won't go into a comparison with the Silky, but I can tell you right now which one will accompany me into the woods in the future.
    The Gyokucho 881.

    bushcraft+bushcraft saw+folding saw+pull saw+workshopheaven

I thought I'd share this little gem with you, I hope you find the information useful.
    Back to the Kuksa.....

I think she came out rather well.
You can find some higher res photos on my other blog.

Here's wishing you all a fine 2015 and thank you once more for following my blog.

Kolrossing pattern for your hand carved spoon.

    $
    0
    0
I've shied away from the Sami patterns that are quite common on Scandinavian/Nordic type spoons.
However, today I  succumbed -  due in part I think to a curiosity about setting up the repeating pattern.
I've seen a lot of this type of design, I took a look around the web today and could find no information as to how to set the whole thing up.
The reason for the lack of information is undoubtedly down to looking in the wrong place.
    Doh !

So, here is my own tutorial on how one might go about setting the pattern up.

It's snowing out, the flu or whatever it is is making a comeback, so I've lit the fire and I'm working in the warm today.

Apart from a wooden spoon, you'll need a super sharp knife, pencil, rule, fine Abrenet (optional) and some dry, finely ground coffee.

    Not a bad tool list...

    spooncarving+kolrosing

I selected a spoon that I've carved for a friend who is embarking on a cycle tour across Europe, commencing in the spring.

    spooncarving+kolrosing

All I need to do now is carve one for his lovely wife.
Can't have arguments on the adventure eh ?

    spooncarving+kolrosing

Have a practice first on a clear sheet of paper then
with your rule and pencil, make feint cross hatchings on the spoon.
Then, with a heavier line, mark out the patten.

    spooncarving+kolrosing

I have highlighted the basic repeat in blue.
    I hope this makes sense.
Once finished, check the work to make sure there are no errors.

Once you are happy with your design, carefully cut along the heavier pencil lines.
Just one slice, not too deep.

Once you are happy with your work so far and have been over the complete design, use the tip of your knife to make the Maltese cross shape.
    Simply poke in and remove.
Or sharpen a fine nail to make a dot.

    spooncarving+kolrosing

Finally, rub some coffee grounds into the design with clean dry fingers.
Wet or oily fingers will cause the fine cuts to close up.

    spooncarving+kolrosing

Clean the spoon with a clean cloth.
Lightly sand with super fine Abrenet
     to remove any raised fibres.
    And oil.

    spooncarving+kolrosing

I'm going to ask Sarah to proof read this whilst I nip into the kitchen and make a

    Lemon.
    Cinamon.
    Honey.
    Cognac.

    Enjoy.... J.

    Re Profiled Gransfors Bruk.

    $

Last summer, my good friend and associate Chris Grant came to stay with Sarah and I in our little home on Dartmoor.
As you may know, Chris is a Bladesmith, an old hand, who produces my MaChris line of carving and bushcraft knives.
As I have probably mentioned before, Chris has a super web site showcasing his knife making skills.
You can find it here at

    chrisgrant+makemethischris+bushcraftknife
Chris Grant near Start point, Devon.

As ever, we spent a lot of time chatting about knives, steel and Axes.
Chris has a knowledge of steel that will make ones mind boggle.
I mentioned to Chris that my Gransfors Bruk carving axe had a few design issues.
He had a look at the axe and decided to take it home to Scotland for a visit to his workshop.

    gransfors bruk axes+spooncarving axe+makemethischris
    L:standard-R:re profiled

The main issue for me lies beneath the beard of the axe.
A cunningly designed pinch point for my, ok, rather big fingers.

    gransfors bruk axes+spooncarving axe+makemethischris
    L:standard R:re profiled

Above, on the left is a standard G.B carver and on the right is the re-profiled carver.
You can just make out the easing of the tight pinch point in the beard.

Polished underside of the re ground beard.

As well as easing the pinch point, Chris re-profiled the cutting edge, drawing the bevel out further toward the eye.

    gransfors bruk axes+spooncarving axe+makemethischris

This re-profiling has given the axe a much better bite.
When sharpened one can feel an improvement in it's cutting ability.

    gransfors bruk axes+spooncarving axe+makemethischris

It's now faster and more accurate, it slices further through the cut and is all together a much improved axe.

    gransfors bruk axes+spooncarving axe+makemethischris

I have used the G.B extensively now for cutting spoon blanks and roughing out a wooden model of a cooking knife Chris and I are working on.
This is pretty well how all our knives start.

    cooking knife+MaChris+jonmac+chrisgrant+makemethischris

We will have a chat over the phone and when the time is right a model is made.
I then send it up to Chris and he performs his majik.
Tweaking a bit here and there until we are both satisfied we are heading in the right direction.
Once a top quality steel has been chosen that is suitable for the job in hand Chris will make a working prototype which is sent back to me for evaluation.
Now the flu I mentioned in my last post has gone, I can get back to working on our designs.
I'm having some folks stay here for a spot of camping and carving over the easter break, I'll put some of our knives in their hands for some useful feedback.

In the meantime I have been playing with kolrossing designs for my spoons.
You'll find a tutorial in my previous post.

I've been experimenting with some new spoon carving designs.
A touch of chip carving alongside simple tattooing.

    spooncarving+kolrosing+sloyd+woodenspooncarving

It's quite amazing what can be achieved by the simple application of the tip of your knife.

    spooncarving+kolrosing+sloyd+woodenspooncarving

Plus a little dry ground coffee.

    spooncarving+kolrosing+sloyd+woodenspooncarving

Once again, I used a compass to mark out my design.

    spooncarving+kolrosing+sloyd+woodenspooncarving

Then painstakingly added the depressions with the tip of my MiniMac carving knife.

    spooncarving+kolrosing+sloyd+woodenspooncarving

Some of the spoons here are left plain as the natural markings are quite enough.

I've been using my most recent MaChris for quite some time now.
The MaChris bushcraft/carver Chris made for me in 14C28N  has proved to be almost as resiliant as the 52100 bearing steel that is used in our standard MaChris knife range.
There is not much between the two.
I like the idea of a rust proof bushcraft/carver, especially when one lives in a wet and damp environment like Dartmoor.

When I saw this old style cotton canvas ruck sack I was taken back in time, quite a way back in fact.
I bought something very similar to this when I first started out on my hillwalking adventures.
It would get filled, usually overfilled, with things to sleep in and under.
Something to cook on and something to cook.
Whatever didn't fit in it was tied to it.

Bespoke Hand Tools: The MiniMac Woodcarving Knife

    spooncarving knife+MiniMac+bushcraft knife+workshopheaven

This is the best woodcarving knife I have ever used - by a very long way.

It is the finished product of a long collaboration between two good friends of mine, both of them wonderfully skilled craftsmen. Creative artist and woodcarver Jon Mac from Dartmoor and custom knifemaker Chris Grant from Arbroath.

    Jon Mac+Chris Grant

The knife began as a bespoke commission for Jon's work carving elegant spoons, bowls and kuksa. When you watch Jon carve you'll quickly grasp the care and consideration with which he approaches all creative tasks, the design of this tool is no exception. There isn't a straight line on it, and every curve has been considered, refined and perfected by hand and eye.

Chris thrives on the creative process, he gets deeply involved in the design of each project, feeding in his rich experience of blade steels and heat treatment processes. Working to the highest standards in metal, wood and leather, he brings everything together to deliver an exquisitely handcrafted product. He only makes knives, but boy does he make knives!

    spooncarving knife+MiniMac+bushcraft knife+workshopheaven

The development since the original commission has been entirely organic, other carvers have tried the knife and been sufficiently blown away by its performance and dexterity that, with Jon's blessing, they have commissioned their own. Jon is a big guy with large hands, so when the stream of people who wanted one showed no sign of abating, the two got together again to work on a smaller version of his original design that would be better suited to people with average sized hands.

The result is the MiniMac, same sweet balance in exactly the same spot as the MaChris, same extraordinary edge strength, but when you compare the two side by side you can see that the subtleties of both the blade and handle shape have all been completely reworked. The MiniMac is a stick tang, which makes it considerably lighter, although in use they both just blend into the hand.

    spooncarving knife+MiniMac+bushcraft knife+workshopheaven+MaChris

I've had this MiniMac for a few months now, and apart from a couple of very light dressing strokes on 5 micron lapping film I am still using the original shaving sharp edge.

The MiniMac has very quickly become an integral part of how I work; to the extent that trying to carve with anything else just feels wrong. I can work with it for hours with no fatigue and place cuts with a level of precision I had previously not understood. It is no understatement to say that I would now be at a loss without it.

Could you still carve with a lesser knife? Of course you can, absolutely, but at the end of the day I carve for pleasure. There is nothing quite so luxurious as leaning against a tree on a sunny afternoon with a really good knife and a nice piece of wood and relishing every single cut.

    The MaChris Bushcraft/Carving knife.

    spooncarvingknife+bushcraftknife+machrisbushcraft+machris+sloydknife+sloyd

    Design :- Jon Mac.
    Crafted by :- Chris Grant.

The MaChris bushcraft/carver has been in production for five years now.
It is a superbly crafted knife designed for maximum comfort and minimum maintainance.
A fast knife in the hand, this knife will allow the user to undertake the simplest or most demanding carving work.
The MaChris bushcraft/carver is made using 52100 bearing steel.
This steel is extremely tough and will not chip or fold even in the hardest of wood.
The super keen cutting edge can be easily serviced on a good quality Japanese water stone.

The MaChris bushcraft/carver has a Scandinavian grind which is ideal for carving or skinning.
The fine tip will allow a tight turn when tackling internal curves.
The handle has been ergonomically designed to give a high degree of comfort during long periods of use.
The handle design will enable the carver to deliver maximum power in both forward and reversed grips.

The overall dimensions of the MaChris bushcraft/carver are.
    Length :- 230 mm.
    Spine width :- 3 mm.

    The MiniMac carving knife.

    minimaccarvingknife+sloydknife+spooncarvingknife

    Design :- Jon Mac.
    Crafted by :- Chris Grant.

The MiniMac carving knife is made using 52100 bearing steel.
The MiniMac carving knife is a smaller version of our MaChris bushcraft/carver.
This smaller knife is an ideal size for more delicate, refined carving work.

Again, the handle design will enable the carver to undergo long carving sessions with little fatigue.
The blade is mounted to the handle via a pin tang.

A light fast knife with a fine tip useful for tight internal curves and chip carving decoration.

The overall dimensions of the MiniMac are.

    Length :- 200 mm.
    Spine width :- 2.75 mm.

    The MaChris EVO.

    Machrisevo+bushcraftknife+bushcraft+campknife

    Design :- Jon Mac.
    Crafted by : Chris Grant.

The MaChris EVO is brand new from MaChris Design.
This particular model is a prototype made in a very resilient and tough stainless steel.
    CPM 154.
The handle profile is very similar to the MaChris bushcraft/carver giving the user a high degree of comfort and speed whilst at camp.
The handle scales are stabilised Caledonian bog oak some thousands of years old.
    (stabilisation by Crandart knives)
This is a flat grind bushcraft/camp knife designed for some tough use.
The spine is a full 6mm tapering down to nothing at the cutting edge.
The design will allow the user to batten some reasonably large wood for the camp fire whilst also being delicate enough for use in the camp kitchen.

The overall dimensions of the MaChris EVO are.
    Length :- 250mm.
    Spine width :- 6mm.

At the moment we are testing a prototype and if all goes to plan we will make the EVO available toward the end of 2015 beginning of 2016.
I will keep you informed of it's progress.

I would like to convey our thanks to our present customers and we extend a welcome to our new MaChris knife owners.

    Yours.

    Jon Mac.

Sarah and I are getting married on the 22 August 2015.
Our great friend Chris Grant made our rings from Vinland Damasteel.
Thank you so much for this great gift Chris.
Well, pretty much everything is in place, we're looking forward to seeing our friends on the day.

Thank you all for following my blog over the years and for your ongoing support and friendship.
We thought you might enjoy the rings, Chris even managed to make a knife from the remaining billet.

Well that was a busy summer !!!
Sarah and I managed to spend some of our holiday up in Scotland with Chris Grant and Kit.
Chris and Kit looked after us at their lovely home near the Cairngorms, way up on the East side.
I managed to spend time with Chris in his busy workshop and
we also made time for lots of sightseeing in his beautiful country.

Chris took me through the complete process of making one of our MaChris knives from start to finish.
Chris and I also had a look at using a couple of new (to us) steels for our Evo project.
We'll shortly be testing Niolox and Nitrobe 77.
Of course we will still use 52100 for our MaChris and MiniMac lines.

    MaChris Evo+MaChris MaCro+niolox+nitrobe77+bushcraftknifes

    MaChris Evo+MaChris MaCro+bushcraftknives

Chris showed me how the knife is shaped and prepared for heat treatment.
I found trying to capture the various processes technically difficult as the light in the workshop is minimal. But I hope I have managed to capture the skill and concentration that Chris exhibits when he is hand crafting one of our MaChris knives.

    chrisgrant+makemethischris+bladesmith

You can see in the picture below a sequence of steps we take when a design moves from a drawing into a prototype.

    MaChrisdrawings

We will often carve a wooden model to get an initial feel for the proposed knife design.
The photo below shows the model then a blank shaped and ready for heat treat and the finished product.

    MaChrisEvobushcraftknife+bushcraftknife

Chris employs a multi stage heat treatment for the MaChris knives ensuring a totally stable product with the correct crystal structure.
The steels we use are carefully chosen, many steel types have been discarded during our journey toward the professional MaChris knives now available.

    machrisevo+bushcraftknife

    chrisgrantbladesmith+bladesmith+makemethischris

Once the blade is shaped, heat treated and cleaned up Chris applies our trademark using an electro etching stencil. It leaves a clear crisp mark.

    electroetching+machrisdesign

Some final hand polishing to get the blade looking just so.

    knifepolishing+bladesmith+chrisgrant

    chrisgrant+makemethischris+bladesmith

The MiniMac blade being worked on below, received a good polish and was handled with some of Chris's ancient bog oak.
It's being put through it's paces by Patrick McGlinchey.
I've heard through the grapevine he's as pleased as punch with it.

    machrisminimac+spooncarvingblade

Whether it's a MaChris a MiniMac or Evo, all of the knives from Chris Grant's workshop are hand finished, the handle is shaped by eye and touch.
When you buy a MaChris knife you are buying a hand crafted, carefully constructed, professional knife.

    machrisminimac+minimac+spooncarving+spooncarvingblade+spooncarvingknife

    The finished MiniMac.
Did I mention that Chris also crafts the leather sheaths ?

The full tang scales are attached using Loveless bolts and two ton epoxy from WorkshopHeaven.
The MiniMac handles are married to the blades using a hot steel technique plus a spot of Two Ton.

Talking of marrying handles to blades, Sarah and I tied the knot at Totnes during the summer break.
We had a super day and exchanged rings made by Chris during our visit.
Thank you to all who shared our day and a big thank you for all the messages of congratulations we received over social networks

    Happy New Year !
First off, I'd like to thank all you folk who pop onto Spoon Carving First Steps both here and on my other social media outlets.
I haven't posted for quite a while here, I guess winter has a lot to do with it.
Well, today the sun is shining it's little head off, I was thinking of popping out for a walk, but I saw an opportunity to light up my newest creation.
I have been working on her for quite a while, well, mainly staring at her to be honest, wondering where to go with the decoration.
I made a couple of errors along the way, however, I managed to turn them into design opportunities and everything worked out just fine.
I don't have a set of photos from beginning to end on this Hen, but you'll understand the process is just the same as other hens and kuksa I've carved.

    Ale hen+kuksa+spoon carving+MiniMac+jonmac

You'll find detailed step by step info earlier in the blog.
This Hen is carved from Apple wood, grown in the small orchard here on the farm.
Usually I make sure I remove the heart wood, but in this instance I took the chance of leaving it in, Apple is pretty tough.

    Ale hen+kuksa+spoon carving+jonmac+MiniMac sold knife+sloyd

Once again I kept the tool roll small using three simple tools, Axe, Hook knife and my trusty ©MiniMac.

    Kolrosing+minimac sold knife+sloyd+jonmac

It took a little while to add the feathered detail to the Hen.
I don't need to buy a detail knife for this work.
One can simply adapt the knife with a little leather and tape.

    Kolrosing+sloyd+minimac sold knife+jonmac+kuksa

Once the design is finished I rubbed in very dry, very fine coffee grounds.

    So, here she is....

    Sloyd+Ale hen+kuksa+spoon carving+jonmac+kolrosing

She's has a nice coat of Liberon Tung oil which will set over quite a short time giving a good protective natural coat.

    Have a great 2016.
